Abstract

The next decennia there will be a growing demand for healthcare and a decreasing supply at the labor market for health care professionals. eHealth has the potential to make a serious contribution in managing the gap between healthcare demand and supply by giving the patient a central and organizing role in their care process, by stimulating prevention and self management and by creating more cohesion. In this context, an open eHealth portal called PAZIO was developed by the UMC Utrecht in collaboration with VitaValley, Imtech, Vital Health Software, Mediportaal, Leidsche Rijn Julius Gezondheidscentra, NPCF, Municipality of Utrecht, Province of Utrecht and Ministry of Economic Affairs.
PAZIO is a patient-oriented online health portal, which provides evidence based knowledge and an open platform for innovative and high quality eHealth applications. The service facilitates patients to participate at a higher level in the care management process and become an informed partner of health care professionals. PAZIOIn its current form, the portal contains eConsultation, eAppointment, e eRecepy, Diabetes Self Management, ePrevention and a research tool called Research Online. The set of applications united in PAZIO will grow in the near future.
PAZIO aims to become a national eHealth portal for patients. It is non-exclusive towards suppliers of applications. By single sign on patients will have access to the portal and its applications in a secured environment. The service is currently offered to patients via General Practitioners. Distribution via other health organizations is foreseen in the future. The patient portal is a white label product and can therefore be designed in the look and feel of the healthcare provider. The trusted relation of a patient and his health professional stays in place.
The effect of the usage of PAZIO on patients, health professionals and health organization is studied at different GP practices in the Utrecht area. Besides gaining implementation experience and further fine tuning of the system, goal of the study is to show the value of PAZIO both in health care quality and efficiency. Based on the outcome of the study PAZIO and the related business model will be refined.
