High-Tech Meets Low-Resource: Applying Innovation in a Global Health Context

Abstract
Traditionally, high tech solutions to healthcare have only been widely available in the US and Europe, where many are originally invented. Technologies designed with limits on cost, infrastructure constraints, and extreme environments have led to solutions that have incredible impact. Healthcare workers in resource poor settings have been able to increase the quality of service, expand access to care, and improve outcomes.
A panel of practitioners and technologists will discuss how they use technology in low resource settings to address issues of health and wellness. A variety of applications will be described including those addressing data capture and information sharing, clinical education and training, and community provided services. Moderated by the Senior Associate for Global Health at Stanford’s School of Medicine, Dr. Michele Barry, the panel will include explore designing high tech solutions for low resource settings including a mobile technology solutions to improve access to water, a text messaging service used to enable provision of emergency care, and a simulation training module for healthcare workers.
