Abstract

With the changing landscape in healthcare, there are many opportunities for physician entrepreneurship in health 2.0. But, how do you make it happen and actually make a living? I will share my story as a physician with an app idea, my primitive app programming with a medical student that led to partnership with startup Duet Health, the development of the EndoGoddess App, and the business models that we have used to succeed in mobile health. Duet Health, named after its doctor-patient focus, is a mobile software startup in Ohio producing evidence-based mobile solutions upon an original proprietary platform for hospital systems, small practices, insurance companies, and medical education companies. As a physician entrepreneur in partnership with Duet Health, I designed and released the EndoGoddess App (iOS/android) for diabetes management and have several sister products currently in development. The EndoGoddess App has built a steady growth of consistent users since its release in 2011, and has gained national and international attention for its innovative evidence-based design. Physicians across the US are beginning to use the app with their patients. I am now chief medical officer/partner with Duet Health making health apps for clients. Thousands of physicians, patients, and researchers are now using Duet products today, built for clients that range from OhioHealth, to the Harvard Medical School, to the Center for Disease Control. Duet employs a group of talented developers who demonstrate their skills not only by original software and app product creation but also by the ability to integrate these products. In a demo for GE Centricity’s Electronic Medical Record team, Duet's engineers integrated the EndoGoddess app using the HL7 messaging, and are currently working towards providing Stage 2 meaningful use within an Application for a larger health system. Additionally, the Duet team has tested and created a seamless integration of the EndoGoddess App with AgaMatrix glucometers, including the iBGStar nugget. Several business models will be discussed: the EndoGoddess App's social business model, Duet's proprietary software, and app integration models.
