Abstract
Purpose: To increase the awareness of the hospital-based educator related the creative uses and successful integration of free and low-cost web-applications in the hospital setting including considerations and practical solutions.
Discussion: In recent years there has been a proliferation of free and low-cost web-based applications that are available for use in the hospital setting. In many cases these applications are not specifically built for hospital use but can provide either a platform or service that can complement and enhance educational endeavors that are either free or low-cost. This presentation is based on actual use and experience with numerous web-applications in a 714-bed tertiary care facility by a nurse educator.
In this presentation at least seven free/low-cost web-based application categories will be presented including creative ideas and examples for use including: Online Binders, Smart response systems, zooming presentations, track and learn: post testing/evaluation/online activities, shared research documentation sites/repositories, voiced over presentations, and music video sites
Considerations for use and integration include: Firewall, blockers, bypass-proxy, wifi, intranet/internet, passwords, access, and training
Conclusion: Free and Web-based applications can enhance educational endeavors in addition to providing an affordable option where fiscal constraints limit the ability to use commercially sold educational software.
